Wego partners with Oman to boost tourist numbers from GCC

Oman: Dubai-based travel online travel marketplace Wego is collaborating with Oman’s Ministry of Tourism to help boost the number of GCC visitors to the sultanate, the company has announced.

As part of the agreement, Wego will present platform users with a guide to accessible places in Oman during the summer season and highlight “hidden gems” through the country, as well as trending destinations such as Muscat, Salalah, Sohar, Khasab and Duqm.

In an interview with Arabian Business, Wego co-founder and CEO Ross Veitch said that the firm works with about 12 tourism boards around the world, including Visit Britain.

Last year, over $1 billion worth of travel bookings were made through the Wego platform.

“We’re not at something like 20 million shopping sessions a month, so there’s a lot of influence we have over which destinations people are interested in,” Veitch said.

“We spend a lot of time on our blog, social media and website giving people trip ideas. We’re obviously trying to convert them,” he added.

Veitch compared Wego’s work with national travel boards to the work of offline travel agents decades ago, who would work to promote destinations to people in offices.

“We’ve taken that idea and re-invented it for the digital world,” he said. “We can move the needle, particularly out of the Middle East.”

Wego, which was founded in 2005, saw revenues jump 60 percent in 2018 and has announced its intention to go public in the United States in several years.
