UAE, US not yet near the deal on airline subsidy issue: Emirates
Dubai-based Emirates airline has confirmed
that inter-government talks between the UAE and the US are underway to resolve
airline subsidy issue but they are not yet close to reaching the deal.
Newswires reported earlier that both the two governments are close to sealing
the deal on the airline subsidy spat.
"Intergovernmental talks continue but are some way off from a conclusion," an
Emirates spokesperson said in a statement to Khaleej
The US State Department was also quoted in an AP report that discussions are
ongoing but said that there is "nothing to report at this time."
Newswires recently reported that the two UAE carriers - Emirates and Etihad
Airways - would open up accounting books as part of the deal. However, the UAE
carriers have strongly rejected these accusations from the American airlines
about government subsidies provided to them.
In fact, the UAE airlines had stated that the open-sky agreement between the two
countries as well as the massive orders for new aircraft worth billions of
dollars placed by the UAE carriers with the US aircraft manufacturer have
created hundreds of thousands of jobs for the US residents.
